    Assistant/Associate Dean (title based on qualifications)


    The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Graduate School offers certificates and degrees in 12 graduate programs through affiliations with the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Professions. The Graduate School is focused on student success and supports initiatives to enhance the career and professional development of students. In addition, the Graduate School has successfully partnered with the Center for Diversity Affairs on several initiatives to increase diversity in the sciences.


    Reporting and Guidelines

    This full-time, twelve-month non-tenure track faculty position reports to the Dean of the Graduate School and oversees day to day Graduate School operations.

    The Assistant/Associate Dean (AD) is responsible for many aspects of the student life cycle including recruitment of students to the Graduate School. In addition, the AD identifies and implements strategies to enhance student success as described below.


    Serves as GPIBS program coordinator

    • Recruiting for the MS and PhD programs
    • Creating requested reports on student admissions and progressions
    • Co-chairing GPIBS advisory and admissions committees
    • Tracking application process and assigning application reviewers
    • Serving as point of contact for prospective and new students
    • Organizing the GPIBS seminar course for semester 1
    • Maintaining the program web site

    Develops, implements and oversees CDA partnership programs

    • Serves as Co-Investigator and Assistant Director of the UAMS Initiative for Maximizing Student Development Program funded by the NIGMS
      • Recruits students for program
      • Oversees student selection process
      • Develops annual NIH progress reports
      • Organizes all student activities

    Serves as Co-Investigator and Program Coordinator of the UAMS Summer Undergraduate Research Program to Increase Diversity in Research funded by the NHLBI

    • Recruits students for program
    • Processes applications materials and organizes student selection process
    • Develops annual NIH progress reports
    • Organizes all student activities
    • Recruits students for program
    • Processes applications materials and organizes student selection process

    Teaches courses in the Graduate School

    • Serves as Director of the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences seminar course

    Develops and implements professional and career development workshops for graduate students

    • Organizes annual Career Day for Biomedical Sciences
    • Organizes additional career and professional development seminars for students

    Leads Graduate School recruitment efforts

    • Attends fairs and presents recruitment seminars
    • Develops communications plan


    The Asst/Associate Dean is also responsible for a number of administrative functions within the Graduate School including overseeing staff in their day to day activities.

    • Serves on Graduate Council and as the Graduate School Announcer
    • Submits required Graduate School reports
    • Maintains graduate program external assessment calendar and reports
    • Maintains graduate faculty distribution list
    • Represents the Graduate School on university-wide committees including GUS, Academic Affairs, Academic Policy, Chancellor’s Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee, and Teaching with Technology
    • Receives all student grievances
    • Serves as Graduate School Title IX Deputy Coordinator
    • Communicates with central registrars’ office regarding academic plan changes, class schedules, grade changes, and plan changes
    • Answers Program/Track Leader questions regarding GRS policies and procedures
    • Tracks IPE completions and follows up with students and faculty


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Doctoral degree PLUS at least ten (10) years of experience as an academic administrator in an academic health center
    • Graduate background in the biomedical or health sciences
    • Experience writing and managing NIH grants
    • Experience teaching and/or presenting in public


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience recruiting for graduate level degrees
    • Experience developing career development opportunities for graduate students



    • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and as a leader of a team
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills
