Overview

UAMS Head Start/Early Head Start currently serves 928 children at 16 sites throughout Pulaski County.  The program’s overall goal is to increase the social competence of children in low income families and children with disabilities, while improving the chances of success in school. Head Start/Early Head Start addresses the needs of the whole child including the educational, vocational and material needs of the entire family.  The program strives to enhance children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development while enabling parents to be better caregivers and teachers to their children. Head Start/Early Head Start helps parents meet their own goals while giving children a head start in life.

 

The cook prepares meals and snacks according to recipes and menus planned by the Nutrition/Health Resource Specialist and substitutions for dietary allergies/restrictions.  S/He maintains a high level of cleanliness in the kitchen and storage areas; keep accurate records on a daily basis; and must have the ability to communicate effectively with outside organizations and interact with children during mealtimes, as needed.

Salary: $17,680 annually ($8.50 hourly)

Responsibilities

  1. Prepares meals and snacks for children and staff.
  2. Maintain inventory of food, supplies and equipment.
  3. Assists with mealtime in classroom.
  4. Maintains a high level of cleanliness in kitchen and storage areas.
  5. Obtain 15 hours of continued job related education/training by attending workshops, continuing educational courses and meetings.
  6. May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/ GED plus 6 months food service experience
  • Proficient with computers (MS Office preferred). 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle with liability insurance, and be willing to use vehicle for agency related travel.


Must have current health and initial health examination within three months prior to employment

Must be willing to participate in training to further education as required by Head Start to maintain the position
